What is Restorative Yoga?

Private Restorative Yoga is a deep healing modality that allows you to come to a state of complete relaxation. Restorative Yoga encourages you to come into balance with your body’s natural inner resources by activating the rest-and-restore nervous system response, thereby turning down the flight-or-flight stress response, slowing the heart rate, and allowing tension to release from the muscles. This is a practice of rest and stress release that soothes the nervous system.

In Restorative Yoga, the postures are fully supported by props so there is no holding, stretching, or strengthening involved. Absolutely no experience is required. Restorative Yoga poses are gentle and supportive, allowing them to be practiced by most people.

What happens in a Restorative Yoga session?

Postures are chosen for each session based on discussion with the client about what they hope to gain from the work. Depending on the length of the session, three to six restorative postures are provided. Loose comfortable clothing is worn. Sessions are an hour and a half to two hours in length. Most recipients say that they cannot believe how quickly the time seems to go by as they are in such a state of relaxation that their sense of time simply slips away. Kristin will gently bring your attention back to the space and guide the body from one posture to the next.

This is a practice of being, rather than doing, which allows tension to release at a deep level. The support provided by the props creates a feeling of floating. The relaxation response is activated and the body and mind settle in. The effects of restorative yoga can be felt for days after.
